Georgia O'Keeffe once said:
"Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We haven't
time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes
time." Of course, she then went on to make flowers
the subject of a series of her paintings, and suddenly they
took on a whole new importance. Using the camera, artist
Heather Barker has taken this approach to capture the spontaneity
of nature, as in Bee. In her works, she exposes
an entire community of creatures that exist around us, but
that we may seldom observe. Expertly crafting her pieces
through inspired composition, foreground/background relationships
and natural lighting, she boldly focuses the viewer's eye
at precisely the point of intrigue. Simultaneously, she
leaves us wondering, is her focus the flower or the bee?
In Fireworks 1, is it the fireworks, or the tree
the light exposes?
Heather earned her bachelor of arts degree
from Trent University, her diploma of architectural conservation
from Heriott-Watt University, Edinburgh,
Scotland, her diploma of fine arts with honors from the
Ontario College of Art and Design, and took further training
in photography at George Brown College and with Freeman
Patterson.
