Photographer Helen Churchill
has an intriguing ability to visually capture the rich aromas
of salt and seaweed that permeate Britain's beaches. Her
evocative images make us long for the nostalgia of times
past and excursions of which we may have only dreamed. Despite
growing up in inner city London, it is the coastal and rural
landscapes of England that have been the focus of her work.
The images presented at galleryNOW are from her collection
entitled Coast. While often devoid of human form,
the narrative tells a story of childhood family holidays,
evoking the sounds, smells and sights of the quintessential
English seaside, and although these images are an exploration
of one's own place in the world, they also act as a template
through which we can imagine our own longings.
A lifelong student and practitioner of
the art of photography, Churchill began her career when
she won a competition at the age of nine with a black and
white print taken on an old box brownie on a school trip
to London Zoo. She took her first course in photography
in London, graduated with her first degree in 1988, gained
her Ph.D. in 1994, and along with shooting countless images
over many years, continues to take classes to perfect technique,
composition and image enhancement. She has exhibited her
work at a number of venues and has completed several private
commissions for clients in the UK. This is her first on-line
gallery exhibition.
