The works of Leann Simpson aim to reflect her state of mind rather than the reality of the external world. While some of her paintings are reminiscent of expressionism, the difference is that she seems to avoid the darker, sinister aspects of the human psyche. As she deftly balances abstract and figurative impulses while integrating a hint of pattern abstraction, her heightened, symbolic colors and exaggerated imagery still retain a sense of objective observation.
Before entering San Francisco State University, Simpson was selected to attend a summer program at the Art Institute of Southern California, which culminated with a competitive arts scholarship. She has subsequently pursued her artistic talent as a commissioned muralist, completing several murals throughout Southern California.
